2.1 Thesis with Nigle

Week 5

Literature Part 2:

Meanwhile, another group of artists claimed that AI is a very effective tool that is no different from photoshop or other 2D software creations, as they are both presentations of the artist’s inspiration and thinking. Sarah (2023) claims that true art is about the creative process much more than it’s about the final piece, and simply pressing a button to generate an image is not a creative process. In the book “A Philosophy of Computer Art” ,there is a description of art that discusses how art has grown and changed with time. Lopes (2009, p.67) notes that, “There’s more to art than sitting around and looking pretty. Art works are opportunities for action, and their value depends on the tasks they afford. First comes creative activity, then sometimes performance, and finally appreciation, which includes looking, listening, reading, interacting, interpreting, liking, critiquing, and much else besides”. Therefore, art is not just a resultant presentation, its value is embodied in the whole ecology of the work and reality. the use of AI accelerates this cycle and even rubs some wonderful sparks in it. Liu (2022) states that, “with AI, we are about to enter a period of massive change in all fields, not just art. Many people will lose their jobs. At the same time, there will be an explosion of creativity and possibility and new jobs being created”. Ghosh and Fossas(2022, p.1) claims that, “AI generative models have the possibility of being a positive, new modality in art that does not displace or harm existing artists”. In short, the trend of AI automation will take art into an unpredictable future, and artists will need to learn to utilise ai tools to find their place in the wave of AI.

Week 4

Literature Part 1:

In the 21st century, artificial intelligence is intruding into what was once thought to be a human-defined field: the process of creating art. Ordinary amateurs can create wonderful, highly complete paintings by simply describing things in words. We used to think that the best part of art was the randomness that comes naturally to the artist as a human being, but now it seems that this randomness can also be programmed at the same time. Pierre Bourdieu defines that culture is “habitus” (Cegin, Göker, Arlı & Tatlıcan, 2007, as cited in Emrali, 2016, p.116). Emrali (2017, p.116) points out that culture refers to the emotional habits that make us unconsciously cling to traditional ways of life. By definition, culture is open-ended and cannot be shaped; on the one hand, while it is being experienced, on the other hand, it remains partially unnoticed. Gasparini (2018, p.14) suggests that the way a person understands things is based on prior experience. Therefore, in this age of AI invasion, they may not be ready for it. A similar scenario was seen in the documentary film “AlphaGo”, as both the chess player and the public were visibly saddened by their defeat when their opponent was not human, and therefore they needed to redefine who they were. The same thing is happening in the arts, with AI-generated artwork being able to win first place in local art competitions, 16 major photography competitions, and 17 contests (Roose, 2022). Adobe a company that focuses on art creation has also started working with 59 companies like NVIDIA to start developing and promoting generative AI tools (McPhee & Albro, 2023). Artificial Intelligence seems to be taking away some jobs in the arts, causing a large number of artists to lose their jobs (Brunder, 2023, p.11). All in all, human identity has always been closely related to changes in social productivity. So, when AI, the “fast art”(Brunder, 2023, p.13), is introduced, the status of the artist is threatened; will AI replace the artist with its efficiency in terms of time and degree of completion? Will it even destroy art?

Week 3

Introduction:

With the advancement of computers, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly integrating into all aspects of our lives including art creation, AI generated paintings (mid-journey, stable diffusion), and AI text generated videos (Sora). Artificial Intelligence is a tool for art creation, but with the rapid development of AI, it is redefining the relationship between the creator and the artwork itself. This has led to a number of phenomena, AI-produced paintings winning first place in competitions, a large number of basic art jobs being replaced by AI, and people with no basic skills in painting being able to create. Is AI bringing progress to art? Or is it destructive? At this stage, the concept of AI assisting its own creation, whether it will gradually become obsolete with the development of technology, or even the future AI can replace the creator to express. All these possibilities have created a sense of inadequacy for some artists, and may even lead to an identity crisis for the artist.

The article will first explain how AI painting works, presenting how it can be used to create a painting from scratch. Next the article will discuss how artists should use AI tools to create, and its pros and cons. Finally the author will analyse the identity crisis that artists may encounter and the measures to cope with it, taking into account some social phenomena.

Week 1

  • On graduation which area or environment of production do you wish to focus upon and why?
    • Because I want to be an environmental artist, my graduation project will focus on how to create scenery, how to layout, how to light, and how to use environmental narrative to make a good animation work.
  • What skills will you need to attain the standards required for vocational practice?
    • I need to draw concept art, understand the story and emotions, and then use 3D tools to create the environment.
  • How will you showcase your FMP practice for the final shows?
    • Completed an entire animation, with costumes and props and environment and simple animation to show my work.
  • Is it important to directly connect the thesis research to your practical work?
    • It is important to have contact. Because I think AI is a good helper for artists, I will use my works to prove this point in my thesis.
  • Do you have an area of research you wish to conduct that is unrelated to practical element?
    • No, I think it’s a bit of a waste of time.
